WHAT IS REBEL VERSES YOUTH ARTS FESTIVAL?
Founded in 2001, Rebel Verses is a 2-week festival of performances by some of the best youth companies in NYC & beyond. This festival was born out of the dire need here in New York City for new voices in theater. It is a journey into stories you might not know, told by people you might have forgotten. Our collective is youth-based, our extended family is ageless, sexless, raceless and timeless.
REBEL VERSES Youth Arts Festival 2016: Rebirth of the Cool
Some things never go out of style. They become instant classics. Since 2001, Developing Artists honored the voice of youth with the creation of New York's first youth theater festival, REBEL VERSES (RV).
Based on an idea that came straight from our teen members to invite some of the best youth performing arts companies from around the 5 boroughs of NYC to participate - such as MCC Youth Company, The Door, El Puente and many others - RV offers a unique opportunity to unite an underserved segment of the theater community and empower young writers, performers and directors. RV has helped a community of artists grow up together. Artists such as writer/director/producer Ben Snyder (Washington Square Films 11:55 Holyoke), writer/actor Dominique Morisseau (Showtime's Shameless, Detroit 66), actor/writer Nilaja Sun (No Child, Pike Street), actor/writer Raul Castillo (HBO's Looking), Megan Mostyn-Brown (Fox's Gotham) and countless others were able to hone their skills through RV annually.
It’s time for the Rebirth of the Cool that is REBEL VERSES Youth Arts Festival. Developing Artists is extremely proud to partner with Hi-Arts (Hip-Hop Theater Festival) in producing RV for April of 2016. RV has impacted over 1200 young artists and thousands of young audience members through the years and now we are going National! It’s going to be Bigger, Bolder and just plain Badder!
